Adobe Dimension

3D design software

Adobe Dimension (formerly Project Felix) is a 3D rendering and designsoftware developed and published by Adobe Systems for macOS and Windows operating systems.[1]

It was founded as Project Felix on March 28, 2017, and became Dimension on October 18, 2017. Unlike other modeling programs such as SketchUp, models are not created in Dimension. Instead, it is a photo-based mockup editor where models, photos and textures need to be created in third-party software before being imported into Dimension. Once in Dimension, models and images can be composed into arrangements before being rendered to 2D photo realistic images.

Originally relying on the V-Ray rendering engine, in April 2019 Adobe switched to its own 3D rendering engine called Adobe Rendering Engine (ARE) with the release of Dimension CC2.2, and stated that support for external rendering engines may be considered in the future.[2]

Historically, Adobe had a similar program called Adobe Dimensions in 1993, which specialized in 3D-dimensional artwork. It only lasted a few years of support and had garnered lower sales compared to Illustrator/Photoshop, and it was discontinued quickly.

On June 23, 2021, Adobe released Adobe Substance 3D Stager which is part of the Adobe Substance 3D Collection and not included with the Creative Cloud All Apps subscription. Adobe Dimension is still available and included in the Creative Cloud All Apps plan. Adobe has committed to providing support for the original Dimension program.[3]

From another Dimension: Adobe’s software gives graphic designers 3D superpowers

Dimension CC can analyze an image and detect the flat surfaces. How does this work?

Ross: Fundamentally, what it's doing is not algorithm-based, it's machine learning-based. There's no algorithm detecting floors or walls or surfaces, but over time the system learns where those surfaces are. We have a massive number of images that we use to teach an algorithm what a floor looks like. When you have an image that has a grassy field, or a tabletop, it can detect the dominant surface in that image because it's been trained against a large data set. Once it's trained, it knows where the surface is. Then it can place the ground plane to match that surface and place the 3D object on top of it.

For us, it’s the only way to make 3D accessible to our user base. We’re going after Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects users — the entire Creative Cloud community. You want a tool that any of them can use and feel comfortable with, one that looks and feels like tools they are familiar with. It doesn't impose new complexities of 3D to them, and that's the opportunity we see in opening this platform, and 3D, to the masses.

Take Your Design To Another Dimension with Adobe Dimension

Adobe Dimension CC Tutorials – Learn How to Use Adobe Dimension CC

This video is comprised of several mini Adobe Dimension CC tutorials to showcase the capabilities of this amazing 3D compositing tool.

You might know Dimension by its public beta name, Project Felix, but it now as a full release, it a new name.

During the Adobe MAX conference last October, Adobe Introduced Adobe Dimension CC alongside the new Lightroom CC and Photoshop CC 2018.

Project Feliz - Adobe Dimension CC Tutorials

Adobe Dimension CC (formerly Project Felix) makes it easy for graphic designers to create high-quality, photorealistic 3D images without having any previous 3D experience.

This video will be part of my Photoshop 3D tutorials series, but it will focus mainly on Dimension CC.

Adobe Dimension CC Tutorials

In this video, you will see several mini-tutorials that showcase the powers of Adobe Dimension CC, and you how can use it to create photorealistic comps that combine 2D and 3D assets.

Here’s a rundown of some of the things that you will learn in this video tutorial:

Place Graphics on 3D Surfaces (Decals)

Adobe Dimension CC has a feature called “Decals” that allows you to drag-and-drop logos or graphics onto any 3D model to see how your design concept will look in real life. Experiment with different layouts — as you move your graphic around, it will maintain the same angle and orientation of your model.

Decal

Match Image Automation

When you import a background image, Adobe Dimension CC will automatically set the light, camera, perspective, aspect ratio, and more to make your object match perfectly. This takes out all the gues work and complicated compositing techniques.

When you choose an outdoor image, Dimension detects the direction and strength of the sun and automatically lights your object accordingly.

Reflections

Familiar Tools and Shortcuts

Interface with Dimension just like other Creative Cloud apps, such as Photoshop and Illustrator. Work smoothly with familiar interactions like file organization, color picker, drag and drop, selection targeting, and more.

Multi-layered PSD Renders

Dimension CC allows you to export PSDs (Photoshop files), giving you more capabilities and control for post-processing 3D composites.

Material Editing Controls

Control the placement and appearance of textures for your materials with offset, rotate and tile options. For example, adjust the direction of the grain on a wooden object to get your desired visual effect.

Adobe Stock Assets

Get hundreds of free Adobe Stock assets that have been optimized for Dimension, accessible right inside the app. Customize your scene with thousands of 3D models, lights, and materials.

Real-time Render Preview

Dimension shows you a preview of what your final render will look like in real time, so you can get the look you want before taking the time to render. Play and experiment with different materials, lighting, and more and see how it looks as you go.

Render View

Animated Tool Tips

Much like the Photoshop CC 2018, Adobe Dimension CC has animated tooltips that show you what each tool and slider does, so that you don’t have to memorize all the options and controls.

Camera Depth of Field Controls

Control the focus settings for your camera to simulate realistic blur effects.

Depth of Field

Material Capture

Material captured is not mentioned in the Adobe Dimension CC tutorials video, but it is a powerful feature that allows you to sse Adobe Capture CC to generate physically-based materials from any image you take with your mobile device.

You can access your saved materials directly in Dimension via CC Libraries and apply them to your 3D objects.

Dimension CC System Requirements

Hardware is the single largest contributor to performance in Dimension CC. Best practice is to use hardware that meets the recommended system requirements. Running Dimension CC on underpowered hardware that meets the minimum requirements may function but limits the performance.

In this guide, you will find everything you need to know in order to learn Adobe Dimension. From classes to books to websites, we have included all of our favorite tools and resources to help you master this Adobe application.

    What Is Adobe Dimension?

Adobe Dimension, formerly known as Project Felix, is a software application created for 3D rendering and design. In Adobe Dimension, you can import pre-made 3D objects, 3D designs, and photorealistic 3D images to create your perfect design.

In most graphic design courses, students will learn about how to use 3D assets in Adobe Dimension to create high-quality designs and visualizations. These are then used in a wide variety of industries, primarily as marketing tools.

What Is Adobe Dimension Used For?

Adobe Dimension is more than just 2D and 3D assets. This application is one of Adobe’s most versatile and is used for quite a few different types of projects.

    • Brand Visualizations. If you are learning how to become a graphic designer, you have likely thought about creating brand visualizations. These can be easily and flawlessly created in Adobe Dimension using its 3D compositing tools.
    • Packaging Designs. Any time you go shopping, whether it be online or in-stores, you buy a product in some sort of packaging. Creating eye-catching and visually pleasing packaging designs in Adobe Dimension is a digital marketing tool everyone should master.
    • 3D Illustrations. There are a large number of reasons you might want to create 3D illustrations, and no matter what the reasoning is, you can easily do so using Dimension.
    • Product Mockups. Before releasing new products, companies use product mockups to get an idea of what the product will look like to consumers. These product mockups can be created seamlessly using Adobe Dimension.

    Essential Adobe Dimension Skills

As is the case when learning Adobe Premiere, Adobe Photoshop, or any software application, there are skills you need to learn in Adobe Dimension that are absolutely crucial to having a solid understanding of the app. Being able to position models, apply materials, and use multiple models at once are extremely important skills to have.

    Positioning 3D Models

Since Adobe Dimension relies fully on you importing 3D models rather than making them yourself in the app, you will need to be skilled in positioning these models the way you want dimension adobe the options to drag, drop, rotate, and scale models can be tricky to figure out, but once you have this skill down, you can easily master others. Be sure to take your time when learning this skill, as the wrong scale or a strange positioning may ruin your entire design.

81% of participants stated they felt more confident about their tech job prospects after attending a bootcamp. Get matched to a bootcamp today.

The average bootcamp grad spent less than six months in career transition, from starting a bootcamp to finding their first job.

    Applying Materials and Background Images

One of Dimension’s most fun features is being able to add different images and materials to your designs. Whether you want to make a football graphic look more realistic by adding a leather material to it or add a cool image for the background of a product mockup, you can do it all in Adobe Dimension.

While this skill is considered one of the more basic skills to learn, it can still take time to master. Especially when it comes to adding materials and ensuring they blend seamlessly to look realistic, it takes a fair bit of practice to learn this skill.

    Using Multiple Models

The simplest creations in Adobe Dimension will consist of just one 3D model, as it is difficult enough to manipulate one model into looking exactly how you want. But, to become a true Adobe Dimension wizard, you will need to learn how to work with multiple models at once.

The primary difference between working with one model and multiple models is that you have to adjust all of them individually to match each other and maintain their realistic form. It can be difficult to scale multiple objects together, but with practice, you will master this skill.

    Learning Adobe Dimension

While you may learn a bit about Adobe Dimension while enrolled in photography courses or a graphic design bachelor’s program, this is one application you will have to spend your own time studying to truly become an expert.
