If an iOS device is registered with an iTune account and the device is wiped, then you must enter the iTunes account password to re-activate it. When the device is corporate-owned and the employee wipes the device (because she is leaving the company for example) you may not have access to the account password. You can send the activation lock bypass code directly to the device or enter it manually. These two actions are available for enrolled and unenrolled devices.
To send the code directly to the device:
- Log in to Admin Portal.
- Click Endpoints, then select the relevant device.
- Click the Action dropdown and select Clear Activation Lock.

Fix an “Activation Error” After an iPhone Reset / Restore
If you’ve ever reset an iPhone to factory default settings or restored a device to set it up as new, you may have run into this “Activation Error” message when going to set up the iPhone again. The accompanying message is somewhat vague and not particularly helpful, saying “Activation request could not be completed. If the problem persists, please contact customer care.” If you happen to be near an Apple Store then sure you can contact Customer Support or stop in to the Genius Bar to get past the Activation Error screen, but that’s not always practical. Fortunately, there are at least two other ways to get past the activation alert message and continue setting up the iPhone as usual.
Before anything else, make sure you’re connected to a functioning wi-fi network that is able to connect to the broader internet. Sometimes a very restrictive router can be the culprit and may block the iPhone from attempting to reach Apple’s activation servers, so simply joining a functioning network does the trick, allowing the iPhone to communicate with the outside world and skipping the screen.

Using a working SIM card is probably the easiest thing to do and it doesn’t require a handful of Start Over attempts. I’ve read off-hand reports of any original carrier SIM card working for this purpose, but I can’t confirm that, mostly because I don’t have a handful of old SIM cards laying around. But what does work is using a functioning SIM card with the original carrier, whether the phone is locked or not.
If you have any difficulties with this approach, be mindful of the SIM card carrier in use. For example, if you successfully unlocked the iPhone from AT&T you might want to try using an AT&T SIM card to “activate” the iPhone initially, and then once the configuration is complete you can switch to the alternate carrier SIM, be it T-Mobile or whatever other carrier you’re attempting to use. This SIM card swap trick has worked for quite a while, particularly for unlocked iPhones that are being used on outside networks.

Activation Lock for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Find My includes Activation Lock—a feature that's designed to prevent anyone else from using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, if it's ever lost or stolen. Activation Lock turns on automatically when you turn on Find My on your device.
Activation Lock helps you keep your device secure, even if it's in the wrong hands, and can improve your chances of recovering it. Even if you erase your device remotely, Activation Lock can continue to deter anyone from reactivating your device without your permission. All you need to do is keep Find My turned on, and remember your Apple ID and password.
With watchOS 2 and later, you can use Activation Lock to protect your Apple Watch. And with macOS Catalina or later and Mac computers that have the Apple T2 Security Chip or Apple silicon you can use Activation Lock to protect your Mac, too.
Here's how it works
Each time an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch, or Mac computer that has an Apple T2 security chip or Apple silicon is activated or recovered, the device contacts Apple to check whether Activation Lock is turned on.
Activation Lock turns on automatically when you set up Find My.* After it's turned on, Apple securely stores your Apple ID on its activation servers and links it to your device. Your Apple ID password or device passcode is required before anyone can turn off Find My, erase your device, or reactivate and use your device.

If your device is lost or stolen
If you ever misplace your device—whether it’s lost or you think it might have been stolen—you should immediately use Mark As Lost in the Find My app.

If you forget your Apple ID or password

Check for Activation Lock before you buy a device from someone else

If you don't see that screen, follow these steps to check if the device is ready to use:
- Turn on and unlock the device.

- Begin the device setup process.

If the previous owner isn't present, contact them as soon as possible and ask them to use a browser to remove the device from their account. Don't take ownership of any used iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch until it has been removed from the previous owner’s account.
A device is ready for you to use when you see the Hello screen.
Before you give away your device or send it in for service
Make sure that you turn off Find My on your device before you give it away or send it in for repair. Otherwise, your device is locked and anyone that you give the device to can't use it normally and Apple technicians can't perform service repairs. Just sign out of iCloud and then erase all content and settings. This completely erases your device, removes it from your Apple ID, and turns off Find My.
In iOS or iPadOS 15
- Tap Settings > [your name].
- Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
- Enter your Apple ID password and tap Turn Off.
- Go back to Settings.
- Tap Transfer or Reset [Device] > Erase All Content and Settings.
In iOS or iPadOS 14 or earlier
- Tap Settings > [your name].
- Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
- Enter your Apple ID password and tap Turn Off.
- Go back to Settings.
- Tap General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
