Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) gives you constant updates but requires a monthly or annual subscription fee. Office 2019 is a fixed package of software, but you only have to pay for it once. Despite shifting focus to Microsoft 365, which used to be called Office 365, Microsoft still sells Office Home & Student 2019 for a one-time charge of $149.99. This includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote but lacks some solutions Microsoft 365 has. These missing solutions may or may not be relevant to you: Outlook, Publisher (PC only), Access (PC only) and the OneDrive and Skype cloud services.

You can buy some pieces of the Office suite individually, but considering Word 2019 is $139.99, if you plan on using even 1 more Office app, it’s a better deal to buy the whole platform.

No matter where you get Office 2019, it won't be updated monthly like Microsoft 365 is. That means you’ll never see new features added. What you buy is what you get. However, you will get security patch updates “as required,”  Daniel Vargas, Microsoft director of product marketing, told Tom’s Hardware.

It's very possible that you don’t care if your Office software is updated regularly. Heck, you may even be okay with an older version of Office, say Office 2016, which you can still find keys for from third-party sellers for cheaper than Office 2019. However, Office 2016 has reached end of life (EoL), meaning Microsoft no longer provides security updates for it. If you can settle for the 2016 version of Office, you can, as of this writing, get it from Kinguin for PCDestination for about $50. But customer service may be lacking (more on that later). 

Remember, to use Office 2019, you need to be running Windows 10. Luckily, we’ve already detailed how to get Windows 10 for free or cheap.

If Office 2019 is your preferred choice, you can get it for significantly cheaper than the $149.99 Microsoft charges by buying it from a third-party retailer.

Microsoft charges $149.99 to download Microsoft Office Home & Student 2019, but you can save a lot of money if you’re willing to buy it from a different store.

Newegg sometimes sells the same download key for $123.99, so it's worth checking. If you can wait for a physical key, Walmart currently sells the key card for $124, Amazon occasionally has it for $125 and Kinguin has it for a shockingly low $36. 

But before you take out credit card, let's talk about the reasons you might want to avoid these retailers. 

Saving over $100 on Office 2019 sounds like a no-brainer. However, since you’re not buying from Microsoft, you’ll have to exert some caution. You’re probably comfortable shopping at a well-known retailer like Newegg or Amazon; however, you’ll want to check their return policy on software.

“We always put the customer first and work to find a solution for any problem the customer has encountered, which may include issuing a refund,” Puczyński said. “The Kinguin Buyer Protection is an optional feature designed to provide added protection while purchasing in our store, as well as additional services, but that doesn’t mean the customer will get inadequate treatment without it. Kinguin does reserve its right not to accept any returns of already delivered items or game keys to protect itself from scams.”

Regardless, we've heard of customer complaints regarding slow customer service or the company offering refunds rather than dealing with individual complaints. We haven't been able to get in touch with Kinguin for a response. 

Get Microsoft Office Free: Online and Mobile Apps and More

As its name implies, Microsoft Office Online doesn’t live on your PC. Instead, you can only access these services with an internet connection. You also have to have a Microsoft account. You can get to Office Online by signing in with your Microsoft account here. Once you do so, you have access to free Office tools. 

The service is a good alternative to G Suite, especially if you don't like some of that platform’s limitations. Your files will still be at the mercy of the web, but you’ll be able to use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, OneDrive, Skype, Flow, Forms and Sway without paying any money. Plus, since everything is internet-based, you can access it from any computer connected to the web.

As of November, Microsoft consolidated Word, Excel and PowerPoint into a single mobile app on both Android and iOS smartphones. The app is available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

Free Office Online may not be a good fit for your largest or most complex projects, since features are more limited than what's offered in Microsoft 365. It has less menu options. For example tabs like Draw and Design are missing from Word online. 

The free Office Online does come with 5GB of OneDrive storage, but that’s actually skimpy compared to the 15GB of free storage you get with Google Drive.

Similarly, there are free iOS (varies from iPhone to iPad) and Android (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, Outlook, OneNote and SharePoint) versions of Office software that are also available for free but with fewer features.

Note that you may also end up getting Microsoft 365 for free through a sale. For example, from now until April 18, LG is offering a 12-month subscription of Microsoft 365 Personal for free if you buy a 2021 LG Gram laptop. 

Buy Microsoft 365 From Microsoft: $69.99 or $99.99/year

On April 21, Microsoft renamed Office 365 to Microsoft 365. In addition to a new name, Microsoft 365 brings new features, including artificial intelligence, new templates and content and "cloud-powered experiences," according to Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President, Modern Life, Search & Devices at Microsoft. 

Microsoft 365 Personal, which is for one person across multiple devices, is $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year. You can use Microsoft 365 Home for free through a one-month trial. Microsoft 365 Family, for up to six people, is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. 

Microsoft 365 is a great option if you don’t mind paying for your productivity suite on an annual or monthly basis. It won’t be long until you’ve paid more for Office 365 than you would have for Office 2019, but it does come with more apps than Office 2019. In addition to Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, Office 365 includes Outlook, Publisher, OneDrive and Skype. PC users also get Publisher and Access. 

Perhaps the best part is you can install Microsoft 365 on an unlimited number of devices and log into your subscription on up to 5 of those devices simultaneously. Additionally, Office 365 Personal subscribers get 1TB of OneDrive storage for up to 1 user, and Office 365 Home users can share their cloud storage with 6 users. You also get 60 minutes of Skype calls to real phone numbers for 1 or 6 users, depending if you get Office 365 Home or Personal. 

Another advantage Microsoft 365 has over traditional Office 2019 is its monthly updates, which vary but can include new features, functionally and security updates, “ and often it is all of those each month,” Microsoft’s Vargas told us in September 2019. 

“Most importantly, Microsoft 365 is connected to the cloud, so you can access your content from any device, co-author with anyone in real-time (regardless of whether or not they’ve purchased a copy of Office) and use the power of artificial intelligence to create more impactful content with less effort,” he added.

You can get a free trial for Office 365 Home (only), but it’ll last a mere month.

Buy Microsoft 365 From a Third-Party: $49.99 or $79.99/year

You can also buy or renew your Microsoft 365 subscription from a third-party retailer in one-year packages that are cheaper than what Microsoft charges for its one-year subscriptions.

At the time of writing, Newegg has a 15-month Microsoft 365 Personal subscription for $69.99 if bought with another product or $60 for a 12-month Office 365 subscription, (note that you won't get the features of the current Microsoft 365), which will have to be delivered. 

Amazon has Microsoft 365 Personal for $40 but is charging the same price as Microsoft for Microsoft 365 Family. It doesn't offer the older Office 365. 

Note that you still get free Microsoft technical support for the duration of your subscription, even if you buy your subscription outside of Microsoft. But Microsoft won’t handle subscription or billing issues, such as cancellations or refunds. This is because “Microsoft has limited access and visibility over subscription purchased through a third-party retailer,” according to Vargas.

Get Office Free: Microsoft 365 Education for Students, Teachers

If you’re a student or teacher, you can actually get an Microsoft 365 subscription for free, if your school qualifies. The subscription includes SharePoint, Sway, Forms, Stream, Flow, PowerApps, School Data Sync, Yammer, which aren't included in regular Office 365 subscriptions. However, you miss out on Outlook, Publisher and Access.

Bottom Line

Microsoft Office is a productivity staple. If you insist on the traditional procurement method of buying and owning the software for life and don’t need the software to be updated monthly, you should stick with Office 2019, just know that EoL will eventually come. If you’re not doing big projects but instead just basic documents, spreadsheets, presentations etc., you may be able to get away with free Office Online or mobile apps. Just be sure you have an Internet connection.

Microsoft 365 comes with more offerings than Office 2019, monthly updates, the ability to share among multiple devices, plus a heaping 1TB of free cloud storage. You can get it for cheaper if you buy it outside of Microsoft, for as little as $50 for a year. But make sure it’s a retailer you trust, in case of billing or subscription questions. If you’re okay with making monthly or annual payments to continue creating and editing files, Microsoft 365 -- is tomorrow’s productivity suite.

How to save Excel chart as image, copy or export it to Word & PowerPoint

In this article you will learn how to save your Excel chart as an image (.png. jpg. bmp etc. ) or export it to another file such as a Word document or PowerPoint presentation.

Microsoft Excel is one of the most powerful tools for data analysis that provides plenty of features and special options to visualize your data. Charts (or graphs) is one of such options and creating a chart in Excel is as easy as selecting your data and clicking an appropriate chart icon.

But what has strengths usually has it weaknesses. The weak point of Excel charts is the lack of an option to save them as images or to export to another file. It would be really nice if we could simply right-click a graph and see something like "Save as image" or "Export to". But since Microsoft did not bother to create such features for us, we'll figure something out on our own :)

In this article I will show you 4 ways of saving an Excel chart as an image, so that you can insert it in other Office applications like Word and PowerPoint, or use to create some nice infographics:

Copy a chart to a graphics program and save as picture

A friend of mine told me once how she usually copies her Excel charts to Paint. What she does is create a chart and click PrintScreen, then open Paint and pastes the image of the entire screen. After that she crops the redundant screen areas and saves the remaining part to a file. If you do it this way too, forget about it and never use this childish method again! There is a quicker and smarter way :-)

As an example, I created a nice 3-D Pie graph in my Excel 2010 that visually represents the demographics of our web site's visitors and now I want to export this Excel chart as image. What we do is as follows:

  1. Right-click somewhere on the chart border and click Copy. Do not place the cursor within the chart; this may select individual elements rather than the whole graph and you won't see the Copy command.

  2. Open Paint and paste the chart by clicking the Paste icon on the Home tab or pressing Ctrl + V:

  3. Now all that is left to do is save your chart as an image file. Click the "Save as" button and choose from available formats (.png. jpg. bmp and .gif). For more options, click the "Other formats" button at the end of the list.

It is that simple! In a similar fashion you can save your Excel chart to any other graphics painting program.

Export an Excel chart to Word and PowerPoint

If you need to export an Excel chart to some other Office application such as Word, PowerPoint or even Outlook, the best way is to paste it directly from the clipboard:

  1. Copy your chart as described in step 1 above.
  2. Click in your Word document or PowerPoint presentation where you want to paste the chart and press Ctrl + V. Instead of Ctrl + V, you can right-click anywhere in the file and you will see a handful of additional Paste Options to choose from:

The main advantage of this method is that it allows you to export a fully-functional Excel chart to another file, rather than a mere image. The graph will retain the connection with the original Excel worksheet and refresh automatically whenever your Excel data are updated. In this way, you won't need to re-copy the chart with each data change.

Save a chart to Word and PowerPoint as image

In Office 2007, 2010 and 2013 applications, you can also copy an Excel chart as an image. In this case, it will behave as a usual picture and won't update. For example, let's export our Excel chart to a Word 2010 document.

  1. Copy the chart from your Excel workbook, switch to your Word document, place the cursor where you want to inset the graph, and then click on a tiny black arrow at the bottom of the Paste button residing on the Home tab:

  2. You will see the "Paste Special." button as shown in the screenshot above. Clicking it will open the Paste Special dialog and you will see a number of available image formats including Bitmap, GIF, PNG and JPEG.

  3. Choose one of the formats and click OK.

Probably the Paste Special option is available in earlier Office versions as well, but I haven't used them for quite a while, that is why cannot state with certainty :)

Save all charts in an Excel workbook as images

The methods we have discussed so far work well if you have one or a couple of charts. But what if you need to copy all charts in the entire Excel workbook? It would take quite a lot of time to copy / Gray Technical Excel Draw Free Download them individually. Good news is that you needn't do that! Here's how you can save all charts in a workbook at once:

  1. When all of your charts are ready, switch to the File tab and click the Save As button.
  2. The Save As dialog will open and you choose Web Page (*.htm;*html) under "Save as type". Also, make sure the "Entire Workbook" radio button next to Save is selected, as shown in the screenshot:

  4. Close the Visual Basic Editor and click the Save As button on the File tab. Choose to save your workbook as Excel Macro-Enabled Workbook (*.xlsm). And that's all, you did it! :)

Now let's run the newly created macro to see how it works. Oh wait. there's one more thing for you to do. You should select the Excel chart that you want to export because as you remember, our macro copies only the active chart. Click anywhere on the chart's border and if you see a light gray border surrounding it, then you did it correctly and your entire graph is selected:

Switch to the Developer tab again and click on the Macros icon. This will open a list of macros in your workbook. All you need to do is to select SaveSelectedChartAsImage and click the Run button:

Now open your destination folder and check if the .png image of your chart is there. In a similar way you can save a picture in other formats. In your macro, you will just need to replace .png with .jpg or .gif like this:

A bar chart (or a bar graph) is one of the easiest ways to present your data in Excel, where horizontal bars are used to compare data values. Here’s how to make and format bar charts in Microsoft Excel.

Inserting Bar Charts in Microsoft Excel

While you can potentially turn any set of Excel data into a bar chart, It makes more sense to do this with data when straight comparisons are possible, such as comparing the sales data for a number of products. You can also create combo charts in Excel, where bar charts can be combined with other chart types to show two types of data together.

We’ll be using fictional sales data as our example data set to help you visualize how this data could be converted into a bar chart in Excel. For more complex comparisons, alternative chart types like histograms might be better options.

To insert a bar chart in Microsoft Excel, open your Excel workbook and select your data. You can do this manually using your mouse, or you can select a cell in your range and press Ctrl+A to select the data automatically.

Once your data is selected, click Insert > Insert Column or Bar Chart.

Various column charts are available, but to insert a standard bar chart, click the “Clustered Chart” option. This chart is the first icon listed under the “2-D Column” section.

Excel will automatically take the data from your data set to create the chart on the same worksheet, using your column labels to set axis and chart titles. You can move or resize the chart to another position on the same worksheet, or cut or copy the chart to another worksheet or workbook file.

For our example, the sales data has been converted into a bar chart showing a comparison of the number of sales for each electronic product.

For this set of data, mice were bought the least with 9 sales, while headphones were bought the most with 55 sales. This comparison is visually obvious from the chart as presented.

Formatting Bar Charts in Microsoft Excel

By default, a bar chart in Excel is created using a set style, with a title for the chart extrapolated from one of the column labels (if available).

You can make many formatting changes to your chart, should you wish to. You can change the color and style of your chart, change the chart title, as well as add or edit axis labels on both sides.

It’s also possible to add trendlines to your Excel chart, allowing you to see greater patterns (trends) in your data. This would be especially important for sales data, where a trendline could visualize decreasing or increasing number of sales over time.

Changing Chart Title Text

To change the title text for a bar chart, double-click the title text box above the chart itself. You’ll then be able to edit or format the text as required.

If you want to remove the chart title completely, select your chart and click the “Chart Elements” icon on the right, shown visually as a green, “+” symbol.

From here, click the checkbox next to the “Chart Title” option to deselect it.

Your chart title will be removed once the checkbox has been removed.

Adding and Editing Axis Labels

To add axis labels to your bar chart, select your chart and click the green “Chart Elements” icon (the “+” icon).

From the “Chart Elements” menu, enable the “Axis Titles” checkbox.

Axis labels should appear for both the x axis (at the bottom) and the y axis (on the left). These will appear as text boxes.

To edit the labels, double-click the text boxes next to each axis. Edit the text in each text box accordingly, then select outside of the text box once you’ve finished making changes.

If you want to remove the labels, follow the same steps to remove the checkbox from the “Chart Elements” menu by pressing the green, “+” icon. Removing the checkbox next to the “Axis Titles” option will immediately remove the labels from view.

Changing Chart Style and Colors

Microsoft Excel offers a number of chart themes (named styles) that you can apply to your bar chart. To apply these, select your chart and then click the “Chart Styles” icon on the right that looks like a paint brush.

A list of style options will become visible in a drop-down menu under the “Style” section.

Select one of these styles to change the visual appearance of your chart, including changing the bar layout and background.

You can access the same chart styles by clicking the “Design” tab, under the “Chart Tools” section on the ribbon bar.

The same chart styles will be visible under the “Chart Styles” section—clicking any of the options shown will change your chart style in the same way as the method above.

You can also make changes to the colors used in your chart in the “Color” section of the Chart Styles menu.

Color options are grouped, so select one of the color palette groupings to apply those colors to your chart.

You can test each color style by hovering over them with your mouse first. Your chart will change to show how the chart will look with those colors applied.

Further Bar Chart Formatting Options

You can make further formatting changes to your bar chart by right-clicking the chart and selecting the “Format Chart Area” option.

This will bring up the “Format Chart Area” menu on the right. From here, you can change the fill, border, and other chart formatting options for your chart under the “Chart Options” section.

You can also change how text is displayed on your chart under the “Text Options” section, allowing you to add colors, effects, and patterns to your title and axis labels, as well as change how your text is aligned on the chart.

If you want to make further text formatting changes, you can do this using the standard text formatting options under the “Home” tab while you’re editing a label.

How to Make a Timeline in Excel Using a Template

A pre-formatted template will open, complete with sections, sub-tasks, sample attachments, progress tracking, and budget formulas. There will also be some sample content for reference.

  1. To delete the yellow box at the top of the template, click on the box, right-click, and select Delete Row.

  1. Double-click the 'Welcome Event' cell highlight the existing content, and type in your information.
  2. Double-click the yellow Decorations text, highlight the existing content, and type in your information. This title should be one of the main categories for planning your conference (“Select Venue,” “Recruit Sponsors,” “Registration,” etc). 
  3. Click on a blank cell in the Phase column and type in another category. Highlight the entire row, from the Done column through the Started column, click the paint bucket icon, and click yellow. Repeat for as many category rows needed.

  1. Click on the cell under the new category created (in this example, it’s “Event Marketing”) and add a sub-sub-task, such as “Social Media.” Next, click the Indent button in the toolbar to turn the new categories you just created into sub-tasks. Repeat for all new categories.

  1. The Total Budget column will automatically calculate, based on the costs you input into the corresponding columns. 
  2. Enter start and due dates for each task in the Due and Started columns. When a part of the project is completed, double-click on the date cell and click the letter strikethrough button on the left-hand toolbar (the button with the “S” with a line through it). 
  3. For each row, under the Status column, click the cell and choose a symbol that matches the progress in the drop-down menu. This can be a green check, a yellow exclamation point, or a red 'X' mark. This will let you easily view how much of a specific task has been accomplished, or if it is on hold.

  1. Under the Assigned To column, click a cell and select the assignee from the pop-up menu. You can even add contacts who don’t work for the company.

  1. To view the data you just entered as a Gantt chart, click on the Gantt View button in the toolbar.

 You can customize the appearance of your Gantt chart with just a couple clicks. To change the colors of the task bars: 

  1. Right-click on a task bar and select Color Settings.
  2. A color palette will appear, letting you change the color of the bar. 
  3. If you want to apply the same color to multiple task bars, click the task bars while holding down the Shift button. This will select all the bars. Then, release the Shift button, right-click on any of the selected bars, and click Color Settings.

How to use Excel's border options by creating a simple floor plan

You probably don't think of Excel as graphics or drafting software—because it isn't. But you can make do with Excel and forego the expense and learning curve that goes along with new software if all you need is a simple outline. In this article, we'll use Excel's border options to create a simple floorplan, which isn't something you'd ordinarily turn to Excel to accomplish.

As we explore the border feature, you'll also learn Excel's default cell measurements and how to use the Name Box to help select large areas of cells. Once you're familiar with these features, you'll be better prepared to apply them to your own work, which probably won't be a floorplan.

I'm using Office 365 on a Windows 10 64-bit system, but you can use older versions. You'll need only basic formatting skills to work through this article. You can apply borders in the browser edition, but you have fewer options.

Border basics

First, let's distinguish the difference between gridlines and borders. By default, gridlines are enabled, as shown in Figure A. They're a basic tool that you barely notice, but you rely on them to denote cells. They aren't, however, borders.

Borders are graphic lines—that's it. You'll apply them to make your sheets more readable and to enhance usability. Sometimes they'll align with gridlines, and sometimes they won't. To access basic border features, click the Borders dropdown in the Font group (on the Home tab). As you can see in Figure B, the options are self-explanatory.

Most of the time, you'll find what you need on the Borders dropdown. When you don't, choose More Borders to display the Format Cells dialog, where you'll find interesting tools for displaying specific border styles and colors. In addition, you can customize the border positions. Let's work through a quick example using several of these options:

  1. Select any small group of cells.
  2. From the Borders option, choose More Borders.
  3. From the Color dropdown, choose purple, or any color that will show up well.
  4. From the Style list, choose one of the dash styles.
  5. Apply those choices to the selection. Click the Outline and Inside presets.
  6. Click both diagonal border options and click OK to see the results shown in Figure C.

Granted, you wouldn't apply this type of border often, if at all, but we're just exploring. Using these options will allow you to customize selections quickly.

Real-world measurements

Before you can layout a floor plan, you need cells that are applicable to square footage. To accomplish this, we'll reset cell width and height to one inch; each one-inch cell will represent one square foot. This can seem a bit complicated because cell width and height measurements are based on the default font size, which is 11; the default row height is 15, and the default column width is 8.38. That's really no help.

There are a number of ways to change the height and width of cells, and you can use the method you prefer. Or, use the Format dropdown in the Cells group (on the Home tab) to reset the default width to 12 and the default height to 72, which is approximately one-inch square.

The floor plan

Now that you know the basics and a bit beyond, let's get to that floor plan. You can work with any plan you like, or you can follow along with mine. If you're lucky, it's a simple rectangle, say 40 feet by 20 feet. That would be the same as 40 columns wide by 20 rows deep. Let's try something more difficult: 35 feet wide by 20 feet deep, with a recessed covered porch in the bottom-right corner that's 10 by 10 feet.

First, let's restate these measurements in Excel terms: 35 columns by 20 rows. We'll work out the porch in a bit. Begin by selecting B2 and drag 35 columns to the right and then 20 rows down. You can do the math in your head as you drag but using the Name Box is easier; as you drag, this control updates with the number of columns and rows in the selection. If you scroll off-screen, Excel displays the dimensions in a tooltip near the cursor, as shown in Figure D. Or, you can select the entire area at once by entering B2: AK21 in the Name Box. This method requires knowing the two opposite cells, but if you know them, it's certainly easier than the drag-select method.

With the area selected, use the Borders dropdown to add a perimeter border using Outside Borders or Thick Outside Borders. After doing so, you might want to zoom out to see the entire border (Figure E). Unfortunately, when zooming out, the display loses the gridlines.

Now, let's add that 10 by 10 porch by changing the perimeter line in the bottom-right corner to a dashed line. To do so, select AK21 and using the Name Box as a guide, select 10 rows up and 10 columns to the left, as shown in Figure F

Next, choose More Borders from the Borders dropdown to display the Format Cells dialog. The dialog shows the solid-line border--change it to a dashed line to indicate an outside perimeter line. To do so, select any dashed line in the Style list and then click both solid borders (Figure G). We still need to display the recessed borders. To do so, click the solid line in the Style list and click the top and left borders, where presently no border is indicated. Click OK to see the detail in Figure H. If the contrast between the lines isn't great enough, change the dashed line to another one or change its color.

Now, let's add an entrance that's three feet wide on the left side of the porch that's also two feet from the porch's back wall. Go to the far-left corner of the porch (AB12) and go down two cells (AB14). Then, select three cells down. Select More Borders from the Borders dropdown list. Remove the solid line on the left (simply click it). Choose a bright color from the Color dropdown. Choose a dashed line (not the same one you just used) and then click the diagonal line to the right (Figure I).

At this point, you have the outside perimeter, the porch, and the front entrance. You've used most of the features so you should be ready to finish the floor plan any way you choose, or create a new one of your own. You could change the cell size to represent five feet or six. Use different borders and colors to indicate windows and inside walls. You can even type inside cells to identify each room. With a little practice, you'll be able to apply what you've learned to your own work with little effort.

Want to make some quick annotations to a PowerPoint while you’re waiting for your flight or even live during a client presentation? You can do it in a snap with your S Pen. You can keep working when you’re away from a computer, efficiently wrapping up your tasks even as you’re on your way to your next appointment.

Microsoft Excel tips and tricks

Got a time-sensitive budget proposal to review before you head into your next meeting? You can quickly access it and zoom in on any important detail right on your Galaxy device. Here are just a few ways you can make the most of Excel while you’re on the move.

As with Microsoft Word, most of the features you would find in Excel on your PC can be quickly accessed by tapping on the A icon with the pencil in your top toolbar.

From there, you will have a view of the Home menu.

From the Home menu, you can fill in cells with specific colors, add borders to cells, merge, format and insert additional cells as you wish.

Insert tables, pictures, charts and more

The Insert menu, which you can access by tapping on Home, gives you a fuller range of options including inserting tables, pictures, charts, links and comments.

Access formulas

Need to do some automated calculations? The Formulas menu is where you can set up complex equations and calculations.

Review and add comments

Use the Review menu to view comments made to a spreadsheet or add your own.

If you want to handwrite a comment and have it converted into text in Excel just like in Word, tap on Add Comment, then tap on the three dots at the right-hand corner of the gray toolbar and choose Handwriting. From there, you can begin jotting down your thoughts directly into Excel using the S Pen.

Freeze panes

Sometimes, particularly when you’re working with a large spreadsheet, the ability to freeze panes can come in very handy. You can find that feature tucked away at the bottom of the View menu.

Draw directly on an Excel document using the S Pen

You can also draw on a spreadsheet using your S Pen when using a Note20 device. Open the Draw menu, select your drawing tools and begin illustrating. In the screenshot below, we’ve used a red pen to draw attention to regional sales.

Although there is no Mobile View option in Excel like there is in Word, you can get a more expansive view of a spreadsheet in Excel simply by rotating your phone lengthwise. Here’s an example of our sales spreadsheet as seen in landscape mode, with columns C through F now visible on the screen.

Get Microsoft Office help from Cortana

If you need help figuring out how to do something specific in Microsoft Office on your Galaxy smartphone, Microsoft’s Cortana voice assistant can guide you directly to the setting you need.

As seen in the screenshot below, you can find Cortana’s lightbulb icon on the main menu where you access most features in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint.

To use Cortana, tap on the lightbulb icon and then hit Tap to Talk in the window that appears below.

As you speak, Cortana will display the words you’re saying. In the example here, Cortana is being asked to locate the command for creating a footnote in Microsoft Word.

When you’re done asking Cortana for help finding a command in a Microsoft Office app, hit Tap to Pause. From there, you can tap on the option that best matches what you’re looking for and get the information you seek.
