VEGAS Pro Is Still Around and Thriving. Do You Use It?

A blast from the past.

For those who remember Sony Creative Software releasing the first version of Vegas back in 2003, kudos to you. The non-linear video editor had somewhat of a cult following as its users gave it high praise. For me, AVID was already a prominent fixture in my workflow, and in 2003, Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro snuck their way in. Other than a Sony Vegas 9.0 download over a decade ago, I haven't thought of it since.

So why now? An email brought it to my attention.

Naturally, I zipped over to the website and then dove into some of its history. In 2016, Sony cut ties with Vegas, selling it to MAGIX, who then created the subsidiary Vegas Creative Software. The company offers four different software platforms: VEGAS POST, VEGAS Pro, VEGAS Movie Studio, and VEGAS Stream. Each platform has multiple software bundles that cater to different needs. Still with me?

The question that immediately came to mind was what's up with all the different software options?

Here's a quick breakdown of each platform.

VEGAS Stream

Currently in beta, the streaming software integrates with YouTube, Twitch, and Facebook Live. It also supports up to 4 different video sources. It's similar to Teredek's Live:Air app. After adding each video source, it allows you to live stream to a connected account and switch between sources. It has title capabilities, a preview and program window–all the basic features for a live switch. The software will eventually be compatible with VEGAS Pro.

Cost: Free

VEGAS Move Studio

This is a stripped-down version of VEGAS Pro, but still fairly robust. It's more intuitive than, say, Adobe Rush and slightly above or on par with LumaFusion or iMovie. There are 3 versions of the software: Movie Studio, Movie Studio Platinum, and Movie Studio Suite. Depending on the version, it can support up to 200 video tracks, 16-bit 48 KHz audio, chroma key, plug-ins, and dozens of other features. There's also native support for HEVC, H.264, 4K XAVC S, and XDCAM EX. Here's a comparison chart.

Cost: $49 - $99

VEGAS Pro

This is its most advanced non-linear editor that carries on the tradition Sony laid out years ago. It's packed with tons of features for color grading, HDR support, compositing modes, nestled timelines, mastering in 5.1, ACES support, and more.

There are 4 software bundles to choose from. VEGAS Pro, VEGAS Pro Edit, VEGAS Pro Suite, and VEGAS Pro 365. Again, each offers different options depending on your needs. However, all the base tools of the non-linear editor are supported by each bundle. The main difference between them are the plug-ins each one supports. Here's a comparison chart.

Cost: $249 - $399. VEGAS Pro 365 is the subscription model for $16.67/mo

VEGAS Post

This is a suite of programs that goes beyond editing. VEGAS Pro is combined with VEGAS Effects and VEGAS Image. As the name suggests, VEGAS Effects is all about effects as well as 3D modeling, green screen removal, video scopes, and other features. VEGAS Image is an advanced compositing tool, that adds color adjustment, chroma key, LUT support, and more.

VEGAS Post is similar to DaVinci Resolve in that it offers multiple programs in one user interface. The main difference in terms of price is that DaVinci Resolve is free and DaVinci Resolve Studio is $299. Obviously, both software suites will have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Cost: $999. VEGAS Post 365 is a subscription model for $20.99/mo

Final Thoughts

What jumps out to me are all the pricing tiers and software bundles. I understand why but simplicity can speak volumes. Here's one product, it has everything we offer, now go enjoy it as a filmmaker. It's just less to think about when it comes to supporting workflow, especially when considering using something new for the first time. But maybe I'm in the minority here.

When looking at the alternatives, Vegas Creative Software is an uphill battle if it wants to compete on a larger scale. But maybe it doesn't. Many of the tools filmmakers use fall into 2 broad categories: does it support the story and do you like using it?

I prefer AVID and Premiere Pro because I'm plainly faster with them—the shortcut keys are ingrained. Someone who has been using VEGAS Pro could very well say the same thing. And that's what's great. Sometimes a piece of technology speaks to you more than another. Vegas Creative Software does offer free trials.

That said, there is a large VEGAS Pro community out there. Are there any No Film School readers using it? Do you like it? Is there something you want to see improved? Share your thoughts below.

I have been using PPro(multiple timelines, XMP) + Vegas (scripting). I would take any NLE with that combined.

Magix Vegas Movie Studio 14 Platinum Suite - a rant
--------------------------------------------------

First Impression = Not impressed.
No improvement, in fact it's regressive.

Received an email from Magix today that Vegas Movie Studio 14 is now available. Being a bit leery due to unhappy dealings with Magix in the past (as well as recently) I bit the bullet and stupidly bought the "upgrade".

Immediate impressions are thus:

1) Other than a darker grey color and some font/icon enhancements, the GUI is exactly the same as earlier versions of Vegas. Magix hypes this as a "new, redesigned, more intuitive GUI interface" . it isn't. It's the same as all previous versions.

2) It fails to recognize my 2nd video monitor, doesn't even list it. Both my previous versions (MS10 & MS13) recognized the two monitors automatically upon installation. This version doesn't, and doesn't give any hint as to why or how to rectify it.

3) Here's a good one (sarcastically): Upon attempting to add an existing MP4 to the timeline, or even just clicking on an MP4 from the project bay, brings up this:

OK, what in heck is THIS all about ??? Magix is "calling home" for some DRM nonsense ??? My DAW computer rarely goes on the Internet, and when it does it's only for trusted sites. (as a sidenote, Magix has proven not to be trusted)

4) No email response after purchase (invoice, acknowlegement, etc), the usual with Magix apparently. Upon completion of the transaction a window pops up magix vegas movie studio 14 suite to wait for an email . which never comes . so after a few hours you send a trouble ticket and they respond with "check your spam folder" upon which I send a reply that I don't have any spam folders on either my email client or at the ISP level . all spam traps are disabled. Then back and forth and forth and back with Magix until *finally* in some convoluted way I manage to obtain the serial number.

Anyway, dealing with this company, Magix, is like a nightmare !!! Vegas in the Sony days was a gem in the rough with so much potential to become a great application, but Magix seems to be turning it into a turd, and their customer service practices are abysmal at best.

What a shame.

~ Tommy V ~

EDIT: Also, #5) The download package tries to install one of those 3rd party "FIX YOUR PC TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE" thingies, which is the sign of a company who isn't really interested in providing quality software to it's users. BEWARE, and always use "custom install" so that you can disable such things.

I thought there was a difference between Magix movies studio and Vegas. I know they bought Vegas but don't they have both Vegas and their own movie studio [crap].???

.and yes, they have been a PITA to deal with for many years.

I ran the trial of this briefly. Not really an upgrade and more of a visual update, The suite effects are not usable in the trial, so overall I'm ok with keeping my v13 of Movie Studio Platinum. It does well enough for my needs.Besides, it is the Steam version and has no upgrade option yet.

Vegas Pro's new version seemed much better. Higher performance all around.

If I had a choice I'd go for that, but video is just a hobby thing for me. I could just buy a subscription for Premiere or get a used Mac and use Fcpx. That has some seriously cool UI shit going.

Sony has sold the Movie Studio line to MAGIX, but retained Vegas Pro, as I understand it.

As to the thrust of this thread, I don't have and have never owned or used either Movie Studio or Vegas but I have been a user of MAGIX products for a number of years, currently running Video Pro X 365 (an annual subscription model), having had most of the versions of VPX since it was first released.

Yes, support from MAGIX can be patchy - it actually seems to have become slower since taking over the MS line - but my experience has always been that they will respond to detailed support requests.

They have bundled the utility which claims to "fix your PC" for a number of years. I think most users magix vegas movie studio 14 suite reasonably high-end video editing software take care over what is actually initially installed; speaking personally, I would ALWAYS select a Custom option to install, not least because I use my D:\ drive as my main programs install location, so keeping C:\ primarily for Windows.

The "phoning home" problems with mp4s is caused by licensing issues, apparently. Users of MAGIX "older" programs, Movie Edit Pro and VPX, have also commented on this. MAGIX' response is that they need to know which owners are using mp4 format in order that the correct licence fees are paid, by MAGIX. They don't want to pay for licences that aren't used!

The comment on the delay in receiving confirmation of purchase, licence details etc., is certainly not my experience. The last purchase I made from their website, I had the email in my Inbox within a very few minutes.

Clearly, because I don't own or use Movie Studio I'm not qualified to make any comments on the new or any other version. My overall impression, from a variety of forums I visit is that the jury is still out; some think it is a very good version, with a host of new features, others think it is a waste of money!

I'm not a MAGIX "fan boy" nor a MAGIX employee but I think it's right to show the other side of the coin, from a Reaper owner (at least 10 years) who's also used MAGIX products at least as long.

I am not attempting to start a flaming war but thought an alternative viewpoint might be beneficial to this thread.

Is version 13 the last version Sony put out?

I always liked Vegas, super easy to use. Kind of the equivalent of Reaper, but then for video editing. I have version 9, was thinking of upgrading.

It was the REAPER of DAws as well, until reaper came out. It was the DAW I used since the day it came to beta and until reaper started. I was horrified to learn that it may die, as I still use it for video editing, but upthread I guess I can rest easy

I've got Movie Studio Platnum 12 and use it for most of my video stuff. I've used Reaper too, which is simpler than Movie Studio, but not as flexible.

I DLed hitfilm express but couldn't get it to work. I kept getting an error, "Could not find any D3DCompiler libraries". I checked on line and it had something to do with some dll file, that Magix vegas movie studio 14 suite did have on my computer. I even copied it to the Express folder as suggested, but it still didn't work.
